I found an interesting post while browsing the latest issue of Heriot-Watt University Library's Internet Resources Newsletter. The title of the post is self explanatory" Top 12 Areas for Technology Innovation through 2025" and it presents a report by Social Technologies, a global research and consulting firm.
The company invited experts from the Association of Professional Futurists, Duke University, Hasbro, Worldwatch, General Motors, Shell, Johnson Controls, and Oxford University to answer the question "What will likely be the most important scientific and technological breakthroughs with significant commercial value and impacts on the lives of consumers out to 2025?" According to the expert opinion computers and devices will be smart, networked, with intelligent interfaces, able to recognize meaning and some of them even enabled by virtual reality.
The report is worth reading, and probably close to reality, if surface computers, who communicate only with their surface are Microsoft's latest breakthrough technology.
