In February Ask.com decided to redo their news service and created Big News. With 10 000 news sources ranked by users ( Digg) and algorithm called BigFactor ( taking freshness, impact across the web, multimedia content and related discussion) , Ask .com is committed to show only popular news to its readers. However, I find the mixed Digg and BigFactor scores, a little bit confusing, but interesting because many times what the algorithm determines as top news, is not what the users have rated manually. More info is available at FAQ on BigNews site.
Google also decided to revamp their news service and add local news. From now on users can simply type a zip code, or city name and get their local news from Google News. ”This feature is still a bit of an experiment for us, which is why today it’s only available in English. But we hope to launch this in other languages and editions soon.”, promises the team behind Google News. To get more details, read the post from Google News blog.
My favorite news and local news service is Topix.net and it will be difficult for Google News or Ask’s BigNews to make me switch.
