Europeana, The European Digital Library Site Launches And Crashes After 24 Hours

Europeana, the European Digital Library site crashed 24 hours after its opening last Thursday due to overwhelming interest from online visitors. More than 10 million users simultaneously wanted to log on to the site and take a look at more than two million books, maps, recordings, photographs, archive documents, paintings and films from top European libraries (like The British Library) and museums (Louvre Museum, included).

We are doing our utmost to reopen Europeana in a more robust version as soon as possible. We will be back by mid-December,promised the technical team based in the national library of the Netherlands

If you want to get an idea of how Europeana will look like, once it's reopen take a look at this Power Point presentation. There is also an introductory video that will briefly prepare you what to expect from Europeana.
