As you know libraries in NYC are in dire situation. Thousands of librarians are about to lose their jobs and be laid off and a total of 40 libraries from New York Public Library, Queens Library and Brooklyn Public Library will be closed.
Mayor Bloomberg's Executive Budget for FY'11 calls for a reduction in funding of $16.9 million for Queens Library, $20.6 million for Brooklyn Public Library, and $37 million for New York Public Library. This represents a cumulative 30% decrease in funding since 2008. If enacted, the budget cuts will result in the closure of 40 libraries citywide, 30% of library staff will be laid off, and library service hours for many branches will be reduced to 2-3 days.
Tomorrow in front of Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn Public Library's main library there will be an event in support of the three library systems called "We Will Not Be Shushed 24-Hour Read-In" which will bring NYC citizens together for 24 hours of continuous public reading.
If you love your library, please come and support us. See you at the rally.
